A guide to finding swimwear that fits well, lasts longer, and helps every swimmer feel confident.
Whether you're packing a swim bag for your toddler's first lesson or upgrading your own swimsuit for fitness swimming, finding the right swimwear matters more than you might think. Comfort, fit, fabric, and function all play a part — especially as our swim needs change with age.
Here’s how to choose the right swimwear for every stage of life:
👶 Babies (0–3 years): Comfort, Containment & Easy Changes
What to look for:
Swim Nappies – Reusable or disposable swim nappies are a must. Many swim schools (including ours!) require a double nappy system for hygiene.
One-piece Suits or Wetsuits – Look for soft, stretchy fabrics with UV protection. Baby wetsuits keep little ones warm in cooler pools.
Wide Neck Openings or Zip Fronts – Makes changing easier and less stressful.
Sun Protection – If swimming outdoors, opt for suits with built-in UPF 50+ fabric.
Top Tip: Avoid bulky, water-absorbing materials that can weigh baby down or cause chafing.
🧒 Children (4–12 years): Freedom to Move & Stay Secure
What to look for:
Snug but Stretchy Fit – Children grow fast, but avoid sizing up too much — loose suits can ride up or slip during lessons.
Chlorine-Resistant Fabrics – Prolongs the life of the swimsuit when swimming weekly or more.
Fun Patterns & Colours – Letting your child choose a design they love can boost their confidence.
Top Tip: Look for suits with reinforced stitching — cheaper ones tend to unravel after a few lessons.
👦 Teens (13–17 years): Performance Meets Personal Style
What to look for:
Fit & Feel – Teens care how they look and feel in swimwear, so comfort is key. Look for secure, flattering designs that offer good coverage.
Sports-Ready Styles – Consider competition-style suits for swim training (racing briefs, tech suits, racerbacks).
Durable Materials – Polyesters or PBT blends last longer in chlorinated water and dry quickly.
Top Tip: Support your teen's preferences, but steer them towards suits that won’t slip or stretch out easily — especially for lessons or team training.
🧑 Adults: Function, Confidence & Longevity
What to look for:
Chlorine-Resistant, Quick-Drying Fabrics – Ideal for regular swimmers.
Supportive Designs – Built-in bust support, adjustable straps, tummy control panels, or compression features can enhance comfort and confidence.
Streamlined Fit – Choose a style that allows free movement without bunching or sagging.
Two-Piece vs One-Piece – One-piece suits often offer more coverage and security for swimming laps. Two-piece options can be good for casual swimmers or aqua aerobics.
Top Tip: Don’t settle for ill-fitting swimwear. A well-made suit can last multiple seasons and keep you feeling great in the water.
🧵 Fabric Guide: What Lasts the Longest?
Polyester / PBT Blend – Chlorine-resistant, colourfast, quick-drying, and long-lasting.
Nylon / Spandex (Lycra) – Softer and stretchier, but wears out faster with chlorine exposure.
Eco Fabrics – Made from recycled materials; better for the planet and often just as durable.
🛒 Bonus: Where to Shop or What to Avoid?
Prioritise reputable swimwear brands known for performance wear (like Speedo, Zoggs, Arena, Splash About).
Avoid fashion swimwear (often sold in general clothing shops), which may not hold up in regular lessons.
🏊 Final Thoughts
Choosing the right swimwear isn’t just about looking good — it’s about feeling confident, safe, and supported in the water. Whether you're a new parent or a competitive swimmer, the right suit can make all the difference.
